Top 10 Christmas songs

I listen to a lot of Christmas music. I get the itch around July and begin listening on my iPod. The moment trick-or-treating is over, I can listen to it out loud around the house, of which I take full advantage. I love the classics, the new stuff, and everything in between. And I stay sharp by putting together a Christmas music compilation CD every year with my wife, for the holiday party we host. Now that’s dedication!

I’ve listened to so much Christmas music that I feel compelled to rank the 10 best. Here are my criteria:

Top 10 quotes from The Color of Money

The Color of Money is one of my all-time favorites, the kind of movie that I have to watch to conclusion every time I flip by it on TV (and then I wonder, why am I watching commercials? I have this on DVD). It’s interesting, it’s funny, it’s got Paul Newman, and it’s entertaining as hell. It’s the best movie that Tom Cruise was ever in and it’s the only Scorsese film I can sit through without getting bored to tears. It’s about bravado, guile, dedication, humility, and redemption. And it’s about as quotable as any non-comedy movie there is. Herewith are my 10 favorite lines…

Goofy Fries?

A bit of excitement (congratulations, James, Caroline, & little Randy Jesus!) took me to San Carlos during the lunch hour on Wednesday. I seized the opportunity to have an impromptu date with my lovely wife at one of our favorites, The Refuge. We slid into one of the booths and began to peruse the menu, which constantly changes. Molly found and pointed out something called “Goofy Fries”. I immediately thought: read more

Forget 73 wins…it’s about playoff immortality

Every so often, the NBA pundits roll out the 73-win albatross when they sniff a potentially dominant team. This past summer, Jeff Van Gundy was the latest to trot it out with his prediction for the SuperFriends Heat team. It makes for great press and hype, but it’s almost impossible to do in today’s NBA. Take it from a well-informed authority on the matter. Phil Jackson said that when his Bulls did it, it was a perfect storm: veteran players who knew how to get it done, who had a burning desire to bring it every night, and — possibly most importantly — a centrally located team that didn’t suffer long cross-country flights. Those three elements are pretty hard to come by, even without the unstated pre-requisite that the team’s level of talent must be otherworldly. I’m not sure we’ll see a 73-win team any time soon, considering how soft/indifferent most of today’s NBA players are.

Relationship bubblegum cards

There’s a great scene in City Slickers where the fellas are sitting around talkin’ baseball and Helen Slater’s character can’t understand why men spend so much time talking about baseball rather than about more important and interesting things, such as relationships. Bruno Kirby’s character retorts: “if [relationships] were as interesting as baseball, they’d have cards for it and sell it with gum.” Being a numbers guy, I decided to brainstorm what stats would go on the back of relationship bubblegum cards, if they existed…

New burger champion

My wife and I went to Viognier, a wonderful restaurant in downtown San Mateo, last Friday. We’ve dined there several times now and always have a great experience: awesome food and impeccable service. On this night, we decided to have a quick dinner in their bar area, trying out their lighter Lounge Menu for the first time.

14.5 months

I was born in Saigon at the tail end of the Vietnam War, not long after the Paris Peace Accords were signed. The first few months of my life coincided with the steady withdrawal of U.S. military support and, consequently, the steady encroachment of communist forces into South Vietnam. By late April 1975, the ARVN had collapsed and it was only a short matter of time before Saigon fell.
