Then Fitzgerald is the one you want to follow. Well, minus the alcoholism and chaotic personal life. It sounds a lot like science: there are lots of people attracted to the idea of being scientists, but few actually want to deal with the grubby, tedious business of doing science. Start writing, and then being a writer will follow.
